About Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is an Episcopal cathedral on Spokane’s South Hill, serving worshippers, visitors and audiences for music. It is the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane, which serves eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Choral performances take place within a building known for its Gothic architecture and stained glass. A concert visit and a daytime architectural tour are different activities, with their own schedules and entry arrangements.

Plan Your Visit to Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

Where is the cathedral, and how do visitors enter?

The address is 127 E. 12th Avenue, Spokane, WA 99202. Daytime visitors are directed to the Welcome Center entrance on 12th Avenue. For a concert, follow the organizer’s instructions in case a different entrance is being used.

Give the full cathedral name and address when arranging a ride. Spokane has more than one cathedral, and a general reference to “the cathedral” can lead a driver or another member of your group to the wrong building.

What should I notice about the building?

Harold Whitehouse designed St. John’s in the English Gothic style with French influences. The masonry uses sandstone from Tacoma and Boise, with carved Indiana limestone. Its cross-shaped plan includes a nave, transepts, chancel and sanctuary.

Work began in 1925 when three congregations united. Services started in the completed nave in October 1929. Construction resumed after the Depression, and the transepts, tower and chapels were complete by 1961.

What can I see during an architectural visit?

A rose window is above the west entrance, with a trefoil window high above the altar. Other stained-glass windows illustrate biblical figures and scenes across the nave, transepts and chancel.

For a more detailed explanation, ask for the architecture brochure in the Welcome Center. A self-guided visit allows time to look at the building without treating a performance as an opportunity to move around the audience area.

What role does music play here?

The cathedral’s worship program includes choir and organ music, and a carillon prelude accompanies its principal Sunday service during the stated season. Concerts are distinct from those regular liturgies.

Read the concert’s own program, start time and admission terms. A worship schedule does not establish doors for a ticketed choral performance, and a visitor tour does not include a concert seat.

Can I visit outside a performance?

Self-guided visits are normally offered Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Guided tours are offered Friday, noon–3 p.m. Confirm the current schedule before traveling, particularly around services or special events.

The cathedral is an active place of worship. Keep conversations and photography considerate of people using the space for prayer, and follow staff directions when an area is reserved for a service or rehearsal.

What should I arrange for a concert visit?

Call 509-838-4277 about the entrance, a step-free route, accessible seating and parking arrangements for your date. Describe any mobility equipment or companion needs so staff can advise on the actual performance setup.

Check the organizer’s bag, photography and late-entry guidance. Choose clothing suited to sitting through the program, and leave enough time to reach the correct entrance before the music begins.
