Spokane Symphony: James Lowe - Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto

Spokane Symphony: James Lowe - Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox

Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto opens with a force that fills a hall. The thunderous introduction gives way to sweeping melodies that sustain interest across three movements. Pianist Philip Edward Fisher performs it with the Spokane Symphony on Sunday, January 17, 2027, at 3:00 PM at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox. If you've heard the concerto on recording, you know the framework. Hearing it live, with a soloist and full orchestra sharing the same room, gives the work a different scale.

The program pairs Tchaikovsky's drama with Elgar's First Symphony after intermission. Elgar builds his themes slowly, moving from shadowed introspection toward something radiant and hard-won. The contrast between works gives the afternoon shape: one concerto centered on a single soloist's command, one symphony that explores a longer emotional arc. Both reward focused listening.

Invite someone who enjoys classical music enough to spend a Sunday afternoon with it. Attending together turns the concert into a shared reference point, with plenty to discuss on the drive home. A 3:00 PM start leaves the rest of your evening open, while still giving you something substantial to plan around.
