Spokane Symphony: James Lowe - The Sea

Spokane Symphony: James Lowe - The Sea at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox

How does an orchestra capture the ocean? Spokane Symphony answers that question on Saturday, February 6, 2027, at 7:30 PM, when Music Director James Lowe leads The Sea at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox. The program brings together three contrasting works: Bax's Tintagel rises from Cornish cliffs in waves of myth, Debussy's La Mer paints the ocean in shimmering color, and Jennifer Higdon's Percussion Concerto puts rhythm at the center of the storm.

Principal Percussionist Leigh Wilson takes the spotlight in Higdon's concerto. The concerto moves percussion from its usual place within the ensemble into the solo spotlight. Higdon's writing gives percussion the attention usually reserved for piano or violin, turning rhythm into melody.

Debussy's La Mer closes the evening with music that moves between calm and violence, the way an actual ocean does. The piece captures morning light on water, sudden storms, and the kind of mystery that keeps people staring at waves long after the view should have gotten boring. If you prefer music that paints a picture over music that tells a story, this is your program.

Bring someone who listens to classical music with their eyes closed. A Saturday evening at the Fox gives you a reason to dress up, sit still, and let the orchestra do the work. Check ticket options for Spokane Symphony and make a night of it.
