Spokane Symphony: Morihiko Nakahara - Mateusz Plays Shostakovich

Spokane Symphony: Morihiko Nakahara - Mateusz Plays Shostakovich at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox

Three composers, three emotional landscapes, one Saturday night. The Spokane Symphony's program at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox opens with Andy Akiho's Translucent, a piece built on propulsive rhythm and neon-lit energy. Then the mood shifts to Shostakovich's gripping first Violin Concerto, with concertmaster Mateusz Wolski taking the spotlight. The evening closes with Dvořák's sunlit Fifth Symphony, full of dance rhythms and generosity of spirit. If the idea of hearing one orchestra move through all that emotional range appeals to you, put Saturday, March 20, 2027, at 7:30 PM on your calendar.

Watching a concertmaster step into the solo role adds a layer of interest. Wolski performs alongside the orchestra he leads, offering a perspective on Shostakovich's music that few artists can provide. The concerto is intense, personal and demanding. Hearing it live gives you a chance to follow the conversation between soloist and ensemble as it unfolds.

Conductor Morihiko Nakahara guides the arc from Akiho's modern drive through Shostakovich's drama to Dvořák's joy. The program offers variety without asking you to commit to a single mood for the entire evening. Bring someone who enjoys discovering new music in a live setting, or go solo and let the orchestra carry you through three contrasting experiences.

A Saturday night at the Fox gives you a reason to dress up, slow down and listen. The preconcert talk at 6:30 PM adds context if you want it; the performance stands on its own if you prefer to walk in fresh. Check ticket options for the Spokane Symphony and make space for a night of live orchestral music.
