Spokane Symphony: Morihiko Nakahara - Mateusz Plays Shostakovich

Spokane Symphony: Morihiko Nakahara - Mateusz Plays Shostakovich at Martin Woldson Theatre At The Fox

What does it sound like when your concertmaster becomes the soloist? On Sunday, March 21, 2027, at 3:00 PM, the Spokane Symphony turns that question into the centerpiece of the afternoon. Mateusz Wolski, who usually leads the violin section, steps forward to perform Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that demands both technical command and emotional stamina. Watching a musician you've heard in the ensemble take the spotlight changes the experience. You know the player. Now you hear what he does when the orchestra turns supporting role.

Shostakovich's concerto moves from brooding introspection to fierce energy, giving Wolski room to explore a wide emotional range. Conductor Morihiko Nakahara shapes a program of strong contrasts: Andy Akiho's rhythm-driven Translucent opens the afternoon, and Dvořák's Fifth Symphony closes it with warmth and dance-like movement. There are three distinct musical voices to follow.

A Sunday matinee gives you the afternoon without claiming your evening. Bring someone who appreciates hearing a familiar musician in an unfamiliar role, or go alone and let the Shostakovich hold your attention without distraction. The Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox provides the setting, and the program does the rest. Check ticket options for the Spokane Symphony and make space for an afternoon of live orchestral music.
