The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music at First Interstate Center for the Arts

Some musicals ask you to remember every word. The Sound of Music assumes you already do. "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Edelweiss": these songs have outlasted trends, technology and the people who first sang them to you. On Tuesday, May 25, 2027, at 7:00 PM, First Interstate Center for the Arts in Spokane hosts a North American tour of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic. If you grew up singing along, here's your chance to hear those melodies fill a theater.

The story gives you Maria, a spirited novice who chooses to follow her heart rather than stay behind closed doors, and the von Trapp family she comes to love. Romance, resilience and the power of music drive a narrative that still works decades after its premiere. Director Jack O'Brien, a three-time Tony Award winner, brings a touring production built to remind audiences why this musical became an icon in the first place.

Take your parent, your partner or the friend who knows every lyric as well as you do. Sharing a familiar story in a live setting turns nostalgia into something present tense. Someone else's voice delivers the songs this time, and that difference makes the evening feel like an event rather than a replay.
