The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music at First Interstate Center for the Arts

Some stories don't ask you to choose between history and heart. The Sound of Music has been giving audiences both for decades, and the North American tour stops at First Interstate Center for the Arts in Spokane on Friday, May 28, 2027, at 7:00 PM. If you want an evening that feels familiar but still worth showing up for, this production offers a story about a spirited woman who refuses a life behind closed doors and finds her way by following what matters most.

Three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien directs this touring production, bringing decades of Broadway experience to a musical built on universal themes: love, resilience and the power of music to carry people through uncertain times. His vision shapes how Maria and the von Trapp family's journey unfolds on stage, giving returning audiences a fresh take on material they already know.

The songs do much of the persuading. "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Edelweiss": you likely know the melodies even if you haven't seen the show in years. Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote music that invites participation, not just listening. A live performance lets you hear those familiar pieces in the company of others who recognize them just as clearly.

Bring someone who appreciates a well-made musical or a young person ready for their first Broadway tour experience. The production is recommended for ages 8 and up, with a runtime of 2 hours and 45 minutes including intermission.
