The Who's Tommy

The Who's Tommy at First Interstate Center for the Arts

A young boy witnesses violence. He retreats into silence. Then pinball transforms him into something the world wants to worship. The Who's Tommy builds a rock opera around a story that refuses easy answers, and on Sunday, December 6, 2026, at 1:00 PM, First Interstate Center for the Arts in Spokane presents the dazzling reimagined production. If you want theater that uses music to ask uncomfortable questions about fame, trauma and the urge to follow, this matinee gives you that opportunity.

Pete Townshend's score supplies the anthems: "Pinball Wizard," "I'm Free," "See Me, Feel Me," "Sensation." These aren't simply songs inserted into a script. They carry the narrative forward, building emotional weight as Tommy's silence becomes spectacle and his followers mistake celebrity for salvation. The production pairs myth with music, creating moments that land differently when you watch them unfold onstage rather than simply pressing play on a recording.

Tony Award-winning composer Townshend and original director Des McAnuff return to the material with fresh intention, finding resonance in a story written in 1969 that continues to ask relevant questions today. The work examines what happens when society elevates someone into a savior without understanding the person underneath. That examination feels particularly sharp in a time when public figures rise and fall with unsettling speed.

Bring the person in your life who understands why a rock opera still matters. This Sunday matinee offers a shared cultural experience, the kind of afternoon that gives you something substantial to discuss long after the final note.
